Gwyneth Paltrow discusses black culture on 'The Tanning Effect'

Gwyneth Paltrow went on "The Tanning Effect" to talk about black culture, Jay-Z, Obama and hair troubles.

Paltrow made headlines in May after rapping NWA's "Straight Outta Compton" on the BBC's "Graham Norton Show" (watch a clip here)and sat down with Steve Stoute, the author of "The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy" to explain how she became a fan of the rap group.

"When I was a teenager is when it was all happening, and it was just starting to get into the mainstream" Paltrow said. "It was the Beastie Boys first, that was kind of our way in, and then we got super into it...when I went to L.A. one summer to work in a restaurant is when I found N.W.A and that was it."

The actress is married to Chris Martin, singer of the British rock band Coldplay. The couple are parents to daughter Apple, 6, and son Moses, 5.

"When my daughter understood what a president was, it was a black man," Paltrow said when asked about President Obama. "It's not like me, where I grew up with all of these old white guys one after another ... Their perspective on race and everything is completely open and completely different to how it was when I was a kid."

Paltrow and Martin often spend time with their good friends and expectant parents, Beyonce and Jay-Z. Paltrow discussed the fact that Beyonce finally appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine.

"I don't want to bemoan the fact that it should've happened 50 years ago, because it's here now. And it's like the way I see it is that I have two little kids who are understanding the world in a time when Rihanna is on the cover of Vogue, and we have a black president. So their eyes are being as if they're experiencing the world for the first time. All of this stuff is just root -- it's normal stuff for them. And that to me is what's so incredible."

Paltrow also talked about her father's TV show "The White Shadow," which she said featured television's first inter-racial kiss (though some argue that "Star Trek" beat him to it). And she explained how she ended up performing Cee Lo Green's "Forget You" at the 2011 Grammy Awards, after performing the song on "Glee" and bringing attention to the song.

Paltrow also lamented that she understands what black women go through taking care of their hair.

"The heat makes the kitchen go bananas!" Paltrow told Stoute. "Jewish girls and Black girls we get the kinky hairline thing."

Paltrow most recently appeared in the film "Contagion," which hit theaters in September. She recently finished filming her role as a sex addict in the upcoming film, "Thanks for Sharing." She will also reprise her "Iron Man" character Pepper Potts in "The Avengers," which recently finished filming and "Iron Man 3," which will begin filming in May 2012.
