Rapper and music producer Pharrell Williams and film score composer Hans Zimmer are teaming up for the 2012 Oscars.
The two will serve as music consultants for the 84th Academy Awards telecast, producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced on December 8. This will be the first time either composer has worked on the Oscar show.
"Hans is one of the most accomplished and creative film composers of our time, and Pharrell is a phenomenal songwriter with an amazing list of credits," Grazer and Mischer said in a statement. "This is an exciting and prestigious collaboration that promises to take the audience on a musical journey."
"I am honored to work with my mentor and teacher, Hans Zimmer and I have wanted to collaborate with Brian Grazer on something for years," Williams said. "I cannot believe I will be joining them and their teams on the most prestigious show of the year, the Academy Awards."
Williams is known as part of the production duo The Neptunes with Chad Hugo. The duo has produced hit songs like "Hot in Herre" by Nelly, "Beautiful" and "Drop It Like It's Hot" with Snoop Dogg, and "Milkshake" by Kelis. Together the two have won three Grammy Awards for their work.
Williams is also a vocalist and drummer of the hip-hop band N.E.R.D with Hugo and Shay Haley and released a solo album in 2006 called "In My Mind." He wrote the original song score for "Despicable Me."
Zimmer won an Oscar in 1994 for Original Score for "The Lion King" and has received eight additional nominations for Original Score. Other credits include "Rain Man," "Gladiator," "The Da Vinci Code," "The Dark Knight," "Sherlock Holmes" and "Inception."
In October, Billy Crystal was named host of the 84th Academy Awards telecast after Eddie Murphy stepped down due to producer Brett Ratner's resignation. Brain Grazer signed on to produce on October 9 and Crystal was named host shortly after.
The awards ceremony will air on Sunday, February 26, 2012 on ABC, OnTheRedCarpet.com's parent company. It will be Murphy's first time hosting the awards ceremony.
