Mariah Carey is the latest celebrity to respond to reports that she accepted payment to perform for Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi.
In a statement, Carey said she was “naïve and unaware of who I was booked to perform for. I feel horrible and embarrassed to have participated in this mess."
The singer's statement comes on the heels of similar announcements from fellow stars Beyoncé and Nelly Furtado, who have also come under fire for accepting money to perform for Gadhafi and his family.
Furtado recently announced that she would donate the $1 million she received to charity. Beyoncé has said the money she received has already gone to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.
Carey added in her statement that she'll know better next time.
"Going forward, this is a lesson for all artists to learn from," she said. "We need to be more aware and take more responsibility regardless of who books our shows. Ultimately we as artists are to be held accountable."
