Mariah Carey visited by social worker over drinking, drug use allegations, Nick Cannon says

Mariah Carey was recently visited by a social worker amid suspicions she may have abused her newborn twins by consuming alcohol and drugs while breastfeeding at a hospital, her husband Nick Cannon says.

Carey, 41, gave birth to a son and daughter, Monroe and Moroccan, on April 30 on her and Cannon's third anniversary. She is still recovering from a Caesarean delivery in a Los Angeles hospital, while the babies are being treated in a neonatal intensive care unit.

"Recently I guess there was this big, child protective services were called with allegations that there was some drinking and drugs and all that going on while in the hospital, which again makes no sense to me," Cannon, 30, told Piers Morgan on his CNN talk show on Thursday. "How would a hospital even allow that?"

CNN quoted Cannon as saying that Carey consumed a small amount of Guinness, an Irish beer, following a suggestion by a nurse.

"It all started when a nurse suggested to my wife that if you drink Guinness, a small amount of Guinness, the dark beer, that the ... yeast improves breastfeeding," he told CNN's Piers Morgan in an interview airing on Thursday. "I guess someone maybe overheard that ... and this is a good way to make a quick buck, or call the tabloids. It's kind of sad that people think that we'll make money off of these newborns."

Old wives' tales say dark beer may increase milk production but there are no medical studies that prove it. A 2000 Munich University study also found that consuming the occasional alcoholic drink while breastfeeding had no adverse effects.
