Lady Gaga fulfilled her promise to her Twitter fans to meet President Barack Obama following a recent suicide of a teenager who was harassed online with gay slurs.The 25-year-old pop singer attended a fundraiser for Obama at the home of Facebook's Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and David Goldberg in Atherton, California on Sunday, September 25. She wore a black, sleeveless gown, heels and her hair piled high and was a paying guest at the event, which cost up to $35,800 per couple.
ABC News quoted a source as saying that during a Q&A, Lady Gaga read to the president what she said was a letter from a fan about the suicide of another fan who had been bullied. Obama thanked the singer and talked about his administration's anti-bullying campaign.
Police recently opened a criminal investigation in the death of Western New York teenager Jamey Rodemeyer, who killed himself after being bullied online with gay slurs for more than a year.
Lady Gaga is a longtime promoter of gay rights. She has also said that she was bullied herself when she was in school.
"I am meeting with our President," the singer said on her Twitter page on September 21. "I will not stop fighting. This must end. Our generation has the power to end it. Trend it #MakeALawForJamey"
Lady Gaga dedicated a version of the song "Hair" to Rodemeyer at the iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas (see photos from the event) on Saturday, September 24, MTV News reported.
Lady Gaga also said last week, in wake of the teenager's death, that bullying should be made illegal.
