Lady Gaga to wear lettuce dress in India?

Will Lady Gaga's next (potentially) edible outfit appeal to vegetarians?

The 25-year-old singer, who famously wore a dress made out of raw meat to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, is visiting India to attend the unveiling of the country's first Formula 1 Grand Prix race and is also set to perform after the event. The animal rights group PETA is calling on her to pose in a dress made out of lettuce leaves while she is in the country.

"If she agrees, we'll make her a dress entirely of lettuce and held together by pins and threads," Sachin Bangera of PETA India told the Associated Press. "It will be a full length gown, and we'll make sure it looks sexy. Someone will be on hand to spray the lettuce with water so that it doesn't wilt."

Lady Gaga has not commented. She arrived in India on Friday, October 28. She wore a beehive wig with green and saffron highlights - a nod to the colors of the country's flag, and a one-shoulder, colorful dress designed by Indian-born Naeem Khan (see photos).

"Namaste, everyone," she said at a press conference, quoting a traditional Hindi greeting. "I feel so blessed. I never would have imagined years ago that I would be able to come to India and perform and meet my new amazing fans that are here. The sights here in India are beautiful but the most beautiful sight is the people. I'm looking forward to coming back."

"I have built a special stage for this show that I'm doing on Sunday," she added. "It is unique for India. it has never been done anywhere else in the world. I will be incorporating also collaborations that I did with Indian DJs to the performance. I'm excited for you all to see it."

When asked what she plans to wear during her concert, Lady Gaga said: "I don't want to spoil the surprise."

Lady Gaga, who is known for her controversial costumes, had said on "The Ellen Degeneres Show" she did not mean to cause disrespect to vegans or vegetarians by wearing her meat dress to the MTV awards ceremony.

A lettuce leaf outfit may be easier for locals in India to stomach. Vegetarian diets are common in the country, where cows are considered sacred by the country's Hindus, who make up a majority of the population. The slaughter of cattle is banned in several states.

Lady Gaga had worn her meat dress to protest the "Don't Ask, Don't tell" policy, which banned openly gay U.S. service members. The policy has since been lifted.

Earlier this year, parody rocker Weird Al donned a meat dress in a video spoofing Lady Gaga's hit "Born This Way," which promotes equality and gay rights.

In June, the outfit was put on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the "Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power" exhibit. Preserving the dress took several months. The outfit was kept in a meat locker, placed in chemicals and dried out, giving it a beef jerky-like look. The dress was also painted to look fresher.
