Richard Gere sold his entire guitar collection on Tuesday, earning nearly $1 million, Christie's auction house confirmed.The 62-year-old actor had 106 instruments on the auction block and sold all but four of them, taking in a whopping $936,438. The collection was expected to earn about $1 million, according to Reuters.
Gere acquired the vintage guitars and amplifiers over the past 40 years. Highlights from the collection include guitars once owned by blues guitarist Albert King and reggae musician Peter Tosh.
The "Pretty Woman" actor said he was parting with the instruments to support global humanitarian causes. Gere, who studied said he never planned to collect guitars.
"He wasn't outsourcing the purest examples of guitar making -- ones that were unused the way say a coin or a stamp collector would collect," Kenny Keane, the specialist head of department musical instruments, said at a preview of the sale. "He was looking for instruments that did something personally, tonally for him."
The highest-grossing guitar was a Gibson 1960 Les Paul electric guitar, which sold for $98,500.
Gere is best known for his roles in "Pretty Woman," "American Gigolo," "Chicago" and "Primal Fear." The actor has most recently appeared in films like "Amelia," "Hachi: A Dog's Tale" and "Nights in Rodanthe."
Gere will next appear opposite Topher Grace in the political thriller "The Double," which is slated for a limited release on October 28, 2011.
