Hott or Hott Mess @ the Golden Globe 2011

(InStyle.com) -- Like this year's spring collections, the direction on the 2011 Golden Globes red carpet led directly to bold color: melon, red, sapphire blue, three shades of emerald green and at least half a dozen pinks from blush to honeysuckle to fuchsia. InStyle fashion director Hal Rubenstein picks his top 11 dresses from the red carpet's rainbow.

January Jones modeled a stunning crimson gown from Versace. "I had seen the dress at the runway show in another color and I got it in red," the "Mad Men" actress, who stars in the label's current ad campaign, said of the fringed look.

The Closer's Kyra Sedgwick brightened the carpet in a flowing marigold design from Emilio Pucci. A stack of gold bangles complemented the boho silhouette.

"Glee's" Dianna Agron channeled an Old Hollywood siren in a beaded, blush chiffon gown from J. Mendel. She gave the look an appropriately retro finish with soft curls and loads of diamonds.

"Black Swan" star Natalie Portman glowed in a baby bump-flaunting Viktor + Rolf satin gown accented with a sparkling red rose.

Taking a departure from the vintage-inspired "Mad Men" fashions, Best Actress nominee Elisabeth Moss looked modern in a custom hunter green strapless Donna Karan design.

The always sexy Scarlett Johansson wore a sophisticated Elie Saab beaded chiffon gown in the palest peach.

Catherine Zeta-Jones made a sweeping entrance in a textured emerald ballgown by Monique Lhuillier.

"Easy A" star Emma Stone went minimal in a Calvin Klein Collection T-shirt sheath in a bold sherbet shade.

"Love and Other Drugs" nom Anne Hathaway lit things up in a sequined bronze sheath from Giorgio Armani Privé. "I've got to give it a little shimmy," said Hathaway of the glittering backless gown.

Despite 80-degree temps, presenter Jane Fonda kept her arms covered in a sharp-shouldered George Hobeika dress, embellished with gold and silver sequins.

Pink, cream, copper -- Heidi Klum rocked a Marc Jacobs gown in a fun and fabulous mashup of shades.
