Ted Williams, the YouTube sensation known as "The Man with the Golden Voice," gave a new interview on Wednesday with the CBS "Early Show" and revealed the reasons behind his quick exit from rehab.
It was reported in late January that after two weeks, Williams checked out of rehab. At the time he was seeking treatment to deal with issues involving drug and alcohol dependency.
Williams' rehab visit came after he was involved in a confrontation with his daughter in January and Los Angeles police detained the two at the Hollywood police station for less than an hour, according to The Associated Press. During the verbal argument, Williams was scratched on the face by his daughter and was later accused of still having an alcohol problem.
"It was too much, too fast, and I was just not really focused on what I should be doing," Williams said. "I felt scripted. I was doing live phone-ins (to TV shows) from rehab."
"The weight of the world was on my shoulders," he said, and explained that people were coming up to him in public saying, "Hey Ted, don't let us down."
He now says the family trouble which sparked his rehab visit is "behind me."
Prior to his internet fame the 53-year-old father of nine is a New York native and had been homeless for about 10 years. He worked for a radio station for a while before he was plagued by alcohol and drugs. He has served time in prison for theft and forgery and has been charged with several misdemeanors. Williams became an overnight sensation after The Columbus Dispatch newspaper posted a video of him using his voice while panhandling on the street with a sign that says "I have a God-given gift."
The internet sensation says he's now living in a sober house near Los Angeles, California and looking for voice work. He claims that many of the offers he received at the height of his fame fell through, but adds, "Some of these offers have come back to the table under the provision that I do continue to live in a sober environment."
